Every year hundreds if not thousands of new games get released into the market for various platforms ranging from the PC to the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii. Some of these games do well, others do not – but one thing that they all share in common is that before they’re launched there are people out there carrying out game testing to make sure they’re ready to be released!
If you have a passion for gaming and love to try out new games before others get their hands on them, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t get into game testing. The honest truth is that it can be a viable occupation – so long as you know how to go about it!
Applying for Game Testing
Most video game studios keep a staff of game testers on hand for any and all releases that they plan over the course of the year. So if you want to get into game testing, you’re going to need to apply for it.
Keep in mind that most of these companies aren’t just looking for casual gamers who will play for a couple of hours or so. Instead, video game studios are actually looking for ‘hardcore’ gamers who are going to dissect their games and pick out any and all flaws that may be present.
So if you’re going to get into game testing, you’ll need to be able to show that you’re a gamer who is able to do that.
Getting the Right Game Testing Jobs
With so many games being released, and many different opportunities to get into game testing – you need to choose the ones that are right for you.
To do so, you should not only look at how you’ll be reimbursed for your time (i.e. what pay you’ll get) but also the games that are being released by the studios you are applying to as well.
Think of it this way: If you’re stuck playing games that you don’t enjoy, after a while game testing is going to get tedious in the long run. As such, you want to try to position yourself so that you’re able to test the hottest new games on the market, and that can take some doing.
There are some guides out there that should help point you in the right direction and give you lists of the top game studios around that you can apply too. These are the premium game testing jobs that you should be going for.
At the end of the day, if you want to get into game testing as an occupation – make sure you do it right. In time, you could even earn a nice salary in the region of $70,000 a year or more!
